Event Overview:

Real-world data (RWD) in oncology is essential in understanding the treatment patterns in clinical practice and the adoption of novel therapies. Guidelines can often be ambiguous in the sequencing of available treatments, especially in complex diseases such as multiple myeloma. In the last decade, treatment algorithms for myeloma have evolved as new effective treatments have been inserted into the treatment paradigm. How these new combinations and new agents are being adopted and used in the real world and how they impact survival can only be answered using real-world evidence.

The complexity of the ever-changing treatment landscape is further exacerbated by variation in time to drug approval and reimbursement across countries. In instances where usual care differs between two health care systems, real-world data can be used to understand the impact of new approvals in a given indication. Importantly, identification of relevant comparator populations via appropriate methodology is critical. These types of analyses may prove helpful in accelerating access to innovative therapies through the generation of robust evidence that can be used across national contexts.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • How US-based data can be used in ex-US contexts, including applicability to clinical practice in other countries
  • How oncology real-world data can be used to understand uptake of novel therapies and their adverse events in clinical practice
  • How new drug combinations are incorporated into patient treatment
  • What considerations may be relevant when translating data across clinical contexts

Featured Speakers:

Ben Derman, MD
Associate Professor
University of Chicago

Ben Derman, MD, is a hematologist-oncologist specializing in multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders, with expertise in CAR T-cell therapy and stem cell transplantation. His research explores strategies toward a potential cure for multiple myeloma, including minimal residual disease–guided decision-making, novel therapies to improve patient outcomes and quality of life, and racial disparities in multiple myeloma outcomes.

Andrew Thompson, PhD.
Principal
Lane, Clark and Peacock

Andrew Thompson, PhD, is a principal in Lane, Clark, & Peacock’s health team with expertise in clinical and genetic epidemiology. Since completing his doctorate in 2013, he has worked at University College London and the University of Liverpool and has published over 35 peer-reviewed articles. His work uses large datasets to investigate disease susceptibility, drug utilization, and long-term health outcomes, alongside collaborations with the UK NHS to improve patient care.

Ming He, MD
Senior Medical Director
Verana Health

Ming He, MD, is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist at Verana Health, bringing clinical expertise to the development and interpretation of oncology real-world data. She works across research, analytics, and product teams to generate clinically grounded insights into treatment patterns, outcomes, and unmet needs. Dr He previously practiced clinical oncology and served as a clinical lead for IBM Watson for Oncology.

Christie Ziff, MPH
Director, Clinical Research
Verana Health

Christie Ziff, MPH is the director of Verana Health’s Oncology Research team. She earned her MPH in epidemiology and comparative effectiveness and outcomes research from Columbia University. Prior to joining Verana Health (COTA merged with Verana Health in January 2026), she worked in health care consulting and health technology, with a focus on clinical trials.
