1999-Death of Jesse Gelsinger.Jesse Gelsinger was the first known subject to die in a gene therapy trial. He was a subject in a Phase I clinical trial at the University of Pennsylvania, which later helped bring to light serious issues related to informed consent and violating exclusion criteria.
